A 3- to 4-inch snowfall over south and central Berkshire County closed virtually all schools from Pittsfield to Sheffield and points between, while North Berkshire schools from Lanesborough to Williamstown, including North Adams, opened on a two-hour delay, as did MCLA.
The light, fluffy snow caused minor delays during the morning commute to work, and although the National Weather Service maintained its winter weather advisory as of mid-morning, the bulk of the snowfall had ended by 8 a.m.
The winter-wonderland snowscape that greeted early risers stemmed from a moderate storm that looped out over the Atlantic south of Long Island, N.Y., and Cape Cod after hugging the mid-Atlantic coast.
Here are unofficial snowfall totals from spotters and observers as reported by the National Weather Service as of 8 a.m.:
Alford 4.5 inches
Lenox 4.2 inches
Lanesborough 4.0 inches
Pittsfield 3.0 inches
Hancock 2.2 inches
Clarksburg 1.2 inches
